Listen to a 70-year-old woman speak — for one of the first times ever — to an audience. Project Vive, a local start-up company, creates custom speech-generation devices for people with communication-related disabilities. Arlyn, who was born with cerebral palsy and dysarthric speech, is their first device user. Come to the event to listen to Arlyn share how she has overcome challenges and found access to a device that allows her to share her passions. Mary Elizabeth, founder of Project Vive and recent Penn State biomedical engineering grad, will also share her inspiration behind the company and how she has developed it to where it is today. The rest of the time will be an interactive workshop that will invite the audience to write down challenges they face, their passions, and ideas on ways for them to pursue them. This event is open to all ages and abilities!

GENERATION START-UP takes us to the front lines of entrepreneurship in America, capturing on film the struggles and triumphs of six recent college graduates who put everything on the line to build start-ups in Detroit. Shot over 17 months, it’s an honest, in-the-trenches look at what it takes to launch a start-up. Directed by Academy Award winner Cynthia Wade and award-winning filmmaker Cheryl Miller Houser, the film celebrates risk-taking, urban revitalization, and diversity while delivering a vital call-to-action — with entrepreneurship at a record low, the country’s economic future is at stake.

Women spend an estimated $20 trillion in annual consumer spending, but most of the world’s products are still being designed by predominantly male design teams. As such, many products on the market today don’t adequately address the unique problems that women may face in different aspects of their lives.
In this hands-on, teams of women and men will work through a design thinking sprint to create a prototype that better addresses a specific issue faced by female college students while using their mobile phone.
