GEWPennState 2016 has ended
Global Entrepreneurship Week Penn State celebrates the Community of Entrepreneurship. Penn State and the communities surrounding the campuses that are emerging as a vibrant collective of independent thinkers who work together to get important things done. This is the vision of community enabling a better world through collective effort.

At University Park each day has a theme: Go Freelance!, Social Entrepreneurship, Intrapreneurship Innovation, Entrepreneurial Women, Start-Up Shake-Up.  Keynotes are from noon-1:00 (except Wednesday) and master classes follow the keynotes. Perspective Panels, 3-5 experienced entrepreneurs talk about their successes and failures, are held from 3:00-4:00. From 4:30 to 6:30 every day you will find workshops.  New Leaf Initiative  sponsors networking opportunities every day from 6:30-8:00 followed by Flavor Flights, sponsored by the CBICC, every evening from 8:00-9:30.

Berks--Sustainable Shale Gas Development–Lessons from North America and around the Globe
Thomas Murphy, director of Penn State Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research (MCOR), Penn State Cooperative Extension, will present via Pictel to students enrolled in the STAT 250 course. MCOR is Penn State's education and research initiative on unconventional gas plays. It serves state agencies, elected and appointed officials, communities, landowners, industry, environmental groups, and other stakeholders. The Center is committed to expanding research capabilities on technical aspects of developing this resource and to providing science-based programming while protecting the state’s water resources, forests, and transportation infrastructure. This presentation will be hosted by Ryan Hassler, Instructor of Mathematics at Penn State Berks.

Berks--The Benefits of Global Entrepreneurship to a Berks County Manufacturer
Travis Getz, vice president of operations at Reading Bakery Systems, and Rob Wolfe, creator and founder of Launch DM, will be guest speakers. Getz earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from Penn State. He has worked for Reading Bakery Systems, one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of baking and process systems, for the past 15 years. Wolfe is founder of Launch DM, an international creative digital marketing studio that combines the designs of fine artists, with the industry-leading code of developers, to assist companies of all sizes, and from all sectors, tell their stories.

The program will be hosted by Dr. Janelle Larson, associate professor of Agricultural Economics and Division Head for Engineering, Business, and Computing at Penn State Berks. Larson will discuss the $50,000 seed grant Penn State Berks, in partnership with Penn State Health St. Joseph, received as part of the Invent Penn State initiative. This presentation is free and open to the general public.

Berks--How to Fight Through Early Start-up Struggles
Tim Hillert, CEO and Founder of BenXchange, will discuss the struggles that new businesses face with Penn State Berks students enrolled in Management 215. Hillert founded BenXchange in 2013. The software company provides a user-friendly, fully automated interface that allows the subscribers to search for a variety of insurance; 401k and other retirement plans; and various other human resource products and services. Hillert earned a B.S. in business from Penn State Berks and his MBA from the Penn State Smeal College of Business. This presentation will be hosted by Dr. Abdullah Konak, Professor of Information Sciences and Technology, Penn State Berks.

Wilfred Muskems, President and CEO of Stevens & Lee/Griffin International LLC, will present to students enrolled in Management 461. In 2016, Reading-based Steven & Lee/Griffin formed Stevens & Lee/Griffin International LLC, which helps middle-market clients and foreign companies who wish to invest in the region. Muskems has served as Deputy Secretary for the Office of International Business Development for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), and as Executive Director of the Center for Direct Investment and Director of Foreign Investment for the Governor’s Action Team. While at DCED, he implemented the World Trade PA initiative, which expanded Pennsylvania’s global presence through new and innovative programs. This session will be hosted by Dr. Malika Richards, Professor of Management at Penn State Berks.
